Community Ignored

Hi SOS Members

As you can see from the news release and correspondence below, the community has been excluded from a forum today and tomorrow to plan Sydney for the next 30 years. We must scream from the rooftops at such arrogance. Please consider phoning talk-back radio and writing to the papers. If we take this despotism lying down we only have ourselves to blame for the ultimate results.

Tony Recsei
Save Our Suburbs

18 MAY 2004

Dr Tony Recsei, president of the state-wide community organisation Save Our Suburbs NSW Inc says: "We are astounded that the community has been excluded from a two day seminar on a new 30 year strategy for the development of Sydney. This seminar is being held by the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources on 18 and 19 May.

"The two hundred delegates include civil servants, academics and property developers. However the most important stakeholder, the community has been excluded.

Dr Recsei went on to say " A representative of the Department tells me that the community participation is limited to viewing subsequent transcripts of the speeches on their website. However this is by no means equivalent to participating in the process.

"It seems that this Department has learnt nothing from its past planning failures. A similar attitude is evident in the case of the Planning Minister’s Residential Advisory Strategy Committee that determines the outcome of Council planning strategies. This committee consists of civil servants and property developers who can subsequently benefit from construction resulting from these strategies with no one to put the case of the community.

"A plan for Sydney’s future cannot succeed unless there is full participation of the community in the whole process. It will be a tragedy if the trusting and enthusiastic people of Sydney are to be let down by yet more failed initiatives" Dr Recsei concluded.
